ISLA SAN MARCOS

Breif History and Town Info: After Francisco de Ulloa first arrival in 1542 not much in the way of human habitation has bestowed this Isla till 1923 when COMSA (Compañia Occidental Mexicana, S.A. de C.V.) saw it's potential for gypsum mining. With that....... the town of Isla San Marcos was born and has been North America's No.1 westcoast gypsum producer. The town consists many of COMSA employees and their families. There is one general store and assorted small Tiendas (stores) A small plane airstrip is to the south of town, but premission is needed before landing. Some fuels at times can be had here.

SANTA ROSALIA

Location: N 27.20 W 112.15

POP: Approx 15,000

Access to Santa Roslia: Drive from border (600 miles) Fly~ Loreto Int. Airport Local airstrip Palo Verde

(20 miles south of SR) and Boat

Breif History and Town Info: Santa Rosalia~ also known as the City of Wood~ the first major town once the Mex 1 Highway touches the Sea of Cortez. The town came into it's own around 1885 once French Boleo Company started minning Copper in the hill behind Santa Rosalia. At the time wood was the desired buliding material....... so hence City of Wood, a lager percent of the old wood houses remain to this day. After the copper was gone, Santa Roslia supports it's self, with fishing, livestock, farming and tourism as do most Baja towns. The old Boleo Bakey is still producing Baja's best french rolls, be sure to try some when here.

SAN LUCAS COVE

Location: 10 miles south of Santa Rosalia

POP: approx. N/A

Resources: Fishing, some livestock and farming, Tourism

Boat Ramp: Yes~ high tide Location: next to fish cleaning table , south wall of park.

Access to San Lucas Cove: Drive, boat and smallplane (Palo Verde)

Breif History and Town Info: San Lucas Cove is R/V trailer part on the Mex 1 highway. There is a small town also of the name San Lucas across the road. This is a top fishing area in the central Baja (Sea of Cortez) as stated in The Famous Fishing Guide Book~ "The Baja Catch" By Neal Kelly and Gene Kira.
